A MOVE to review the job title of the town clerk has been dismissed by Malvern Town Council.
Coun Martin Lawrence issued a motion to clarify the role of Richard Chapman, claiming many saw him as the chief executive as well as the town clerk.
He said: “For the sake of peace within the council it needs to be resolved.
“We should determine once and for all whether he is entitled to be referred to as chief executive.”
Coun Ian Hopwood said: “The town clerk is the name of the position but he is the chief executive. In my mind the town clerk is the chief executive because he carries out the functions we want him to do.”
While Coun Peter Smith declared everyone recognised the title of town clerk adding the council should not go around giving ‘airs and graces’ to people.
Other members questioned why the motion had been brought to the table in first place with Coun Helen I’Anson claiming the discussion did not benefit anyone in Malvern in any way.
Coun Caroline Bovey added: “It was said this should be resolved for the sake of peace within the council. I don’t think it’s something we were worried about.”
