Two Chase School students qualify for final stage of Cyber Discovery

Malvern Editorial 24th Jul, 2018   0

TWO students from Malvern’s Chase School have progressed to the final stages of the Government’s flagship cyber security training programme.

Thomas Cassell (Year 11) and Ben Chadwick (Year Ten) were ranked in the top 200 out of more than 23,000 initial participants and this means they have reached the final stage of the CyberStart Elite programme.

As part of CyberStart Elite, the successful students now have the opportunity to attend one of three residential camps throughout the summer where they will develop further cyber security skills as well as finding out more about jobs in the field.

Thomas said: “The programme so far has been really exciting and challenging.

“I feel really proud to have made it to one of the summer camps.

“I’m really looking forward to it. It’s going to be great.”

The aim of Cyber Discovery is to give young people in school years ten to 13 an opportunity to learn the skills needed to either enter the cyber security industry at a junior level, or go on to further study in the area.

Delivered by a consortium of experts including SANS Institute, BT, the Cyber Security Challenge and FutureLearn, the programme looks to identify those with a talent for cyber security at a younger age and to encourage them towards a career in cyber.

John Palmer, faculty leader for computing and business at The Chase, said: “This is an opportunity I really wish I had had whilst at school and I’m so pleased our pupils have had the chance to take part.

“The opportunities offered by a career in cyber security are now so vast, I’m going to encourage all of my future students to participate next year.

“I’m really proud of our students who have made it through to this stage. It’s a fantastic achievement.”
