Two police officers assaulted after crash and during drink-drive arrest in Malvern

TWO POLICE officers were assaulted as they made an arrest for drink-driving in Malvern yesterday afternoon.

Police were called to Court Road following a crash.

The first officers at the scene began trying to ascertain what had happened and trying to identify any persons involved and any injuries.

Another officer on route to the incident was flagged down by a member of the public at the top of Pickersleigh Road just Prior to Barnards Green.

They showed the officer where a man was sat on the side of the road and identified him as the driver from the collision.

The officer engaged with the man and breathalysed him. The roadside breathalyser device indicated the man was well over the legal drink driving limit, so he was arrested by the officer. When the officer tried to handcuff the man, he resisted and fought against the officer. The officer was kneed and punched in the head during the altercation.

A local shop keeper alerted other police officers who were the other side of Barnards Green at the crash scene. They came to the aid of their colleague and assisted in arresting of the man. Another officer was also assaulted by the man during the altercation.

A man in his 40s is still in custody in relation to two counts of assault police and one of driving a motor vehicle over the prescribed drink drive limit. One officer received medical attention at hospital.
