A BREAST cancer survivor who underwent a double mastectomy has organised a fund-raising event to give something back to the unit which cared for her.
Dorothy Elderkin, of Cedar Avenue, was first diagnosed in November 2011 and had surgery to remove both her breast just a month later. Four weeks later she was given the all clear.
Dorothy said she was cared for by Worcestershire Royal Hospital’s Breast Care Unit and could not fault the treatment she received.
She added: “My husband Keith has been absolutely amazing – we are soul mates, we share all the same love in things – so we both just felt we needed to do something to give back.”
In the last three and half years the pair have been raising money for the unit as well as Cancer Research UK by holding a variety of events. But the duo decided they wanted to do something bigger and better.
So the couple set about organising an All American Day on July 5 at Automated Packaging Systems, on Spring Lane, which has agreed to host the event for the cause.
Dorothy said her and Keith both had a keen interest in Hot Rods and owned an original 1928AR Model A Roadster and a 1928 Model A Coupe Hot Rod so they had been rallying support from the motoring community.
The event will be acting as a special car meet for owners of Hot Rods, American cars, bikes and classic vehicles.
But there will be plenty for everyone such as live bands including The Lowriders and The Casablancans, a raffle and a pig roast.
There will also be a competition and prizes for ‘the car I would most like to take home’, ‘best paint’, ‘nearly finished’, ‘best bike’ and ‘outstanding classic’.
The event will take place from 12pm until 6pm and the suggested donation for entry is £3 for those with cars and £1 for everyone else.
Dorothy and Keith are aiming to raise £1,000 but said they would be thrilled if they could beat this.
All the proceeds made from the day will go to the causes – 75 per cent to the Breast Care Unit and 25 per cent to Cancer Research UK.
Dorothy said she had been married almost nine years and was lucky Keith came at just the right time.
“They were so good at the breast cancer unit, the staff were absolutely amazing,” she said.
“This has made us realise without the work of Cancer Research UK my diagnosis may have not been so quick.
“I have been inspired by what happened to me.
“I would like to thank Peter Wylie, Automated Packaging Systems’ MD, for his support hosting the event.”
