FOOTBALLERS who have given up playing because of their age or injury are being encouraged to take up the beautiful game again with the introduction of a new form of the sport.
Walking Football has grown in popularity in recent years as it offers a way for anyone aged over 40 or with limited mobility to enjoy the thrill of the game once more.
Unlike regular football, walking football is non-contact, played on a much smaller pitch and at a slower pace with anyone who attempts to sprint, run or jog having a free-kick awarded against them.
Now the sport is being offered in Malvern thanks to Freedom Leisure, Malvern Hills District Council and Age UK.
Trial sessions have been held over a six week period at Sport Dyson Perrins on Yates Hay Road and have proved incredibly popular.
As a result, walking football is being added to the centre’s activity list with sessions being held every Friday evening from 6pm to 7pm.
James Hayward, centre manager at Sport Dyson Perrins, said: “Walking football is a great way for people over 40 to get back into sport and be more physically and socially active during the evenings.
“After the great success of the trial sessions we look forward to welcoming any and all people looking for a new activity.”
Coun David Watkins, portfolio holder for healthier communities on Malvern Hills District Council, added:“Sir Stanley Matthews was still playing for England at the age of 42 and there’s no reason why people shouldn’t still be enjoying the beautiful game into their 50s and 60s.
“Walking football provides the opportunity for people to do that and I’d urge residents to give it a go.”
Sessions cost £3 per person but anyone who brings along a friend will get their session for free.
