Warning to Worcestershire smokers over their habit's fire risks

Malvern Editorial 2nd May, 2022   0

A CAMPAIGN has been launched to warn smokers about the dangers of their habit with regard to the fire risk it poses.

Smoking is one of the biggest causes of death and illness in the UK but accidental fires started by cigarettes and other smoking materials also kill more people than other types of fire.

Between January 1, 2012, and December 31, 2021, a total of 256 accidental fires were started by smoking materials across Herefordshire and Worcestershire alone.

The most common cause was careless handling when disposing of them – 161 incidents – and another 31 incidents were caused by people being asleep or unconscious.

Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service (HWFRS) is reminding smokers to always be vigilant when smoking or disposing of smoking materials.

Quitting is the best way to remove the risk and people can visit nhs.uk/live-well/quit-smoking/nhs-stop-smoking-services-help-you-quit/ to get National Health Service help.

Those who feel they cannot give up can take simple steps to reduce the chance of their habit leading to a fire. People can also consider vaping as an alternative.

People should never smoke in bed, take care when tired so they do not fall asleep and never smoke whilst under the influence of drugs or alcohol as if a fire starts, their chance of escape could be reduced.

People should never leave pipes, cigarettes and cigars unattended and also ensure they are fully extinguished when stubbed out. Proper heavy ashtrays should be used so they are not easily tipped up.

Smoke alarms should be fitted and tested monthly.

Emma Roberts, HWFRS’ head of prevention, said despite smoking-induced fires falling, they are still the biggest cause across the country an lead to the most deaths.

“Every smoker should be aware of the risks they take every time they light up.”
