Warriors launch this year's Worcester Big Sleep-Out which will raise funds for the Maggs Day Centre

WARRIORS stars Justin Clegg, Matt Kvesic, Anton Bresler and Gareth Simpson were on hand to help to launch this year’s Worcester Big Sleep-Out.

The Premiership faces joined Chris Stephenson and Matt Cowdrey from the Warriors Community Foundation and Nichola Osbourne of the Maggs Day Centre at the launch at Sixways where the Big Sleep-Out will take place on the night of Thursday, October 14.

This will be the third Worcester Big Sleep-Out after the cancellation of last year’s event owing to the Covid-19 pandemic with proceeds shared between the Warriors Community Foundation, Maggs Day Centre and St Paul’s Hostel.

The fund-raising bid aims to raise £45,000 and has already been given a healthy boost with generous sponsorship from Lowe’s Solicitors. But more support is needed to reach that target and help the charities after 18 months in which fund-raising possibilities have been severely restricted because of the pandemic.

“As professional sportsmen we are very well looked after but we know that not everyone is as fortunate as we are,” said Clegg.

“Homelessness remains a major issue in Worcester, Worcestershire and throughout the UK. A lot of people, on low wages or with high rents, have suffered serious hardship during the Coronavirus pandemic.

“Charities such as the Warriors Community Foundation, Maggs Day Centre and St Paul’s Hostel all do amazing work in helping the homeless but, in order for them to do that, they do need financial support. Over the past 18 months they have all suffered a loss of revenue and have had fewer opportunities for fund-raising events and the cancellation of last year’s Worcester Big Sleep Out was very disappointing.

“We are delighted that the event is back this year and Warriors are again pleased to be staging the event at Sixways.

“The weather in October will not be as warm and pleasant as it is at the moment so those taking part in the Sleep-Out will have a chilly night and the discomfort of sleeping outdoors to contend with.

“But it will only be for one night and in a stadium that is secure and safe. For many people sleeping outdoors in all weathers in places that leave them vulnerable or exposed to danger, is an everyday issue.

“Everyone at Warriors is fully behind the Worcester Big Sleep-Out and we would ask our supporters to think about those who are homeless and to dig deep to help us to help them.”
