Worcester comedians nominated for award

A COMEDIAN from Worcester has been nominated for this years Birmingham Comedy Festival Breaking Talent Award.

Lin Smith is among the six acts which have been nominated, alongside Rich Spalding from Kidderminster and five others from the West Midlands.

The award ceremony is set to take place on October place at The Glee – in collaboration with the long-running festival, and The Glee Club Birmingham.

The annual award was set-up in 2014 to recognise, support and celebrate new and rising talent from the region, with this year’s shortlist including Lin Smith, Rich Spalding, Dom Bant, Caleb James, Tom Towelling and Gareth Williams.

The ceremony will be livestreamed via NexyUp Comedy and will have a closing set from comedian Sarah Callaghan.

Lin made her stand-up debut five years ago in Worcester – she described herself as a ‘recovering musical comic’ and said her comedy aims to be offensively fast, lightly fruity and powerfully erratic.

Her work takes inspiration from figures such as Julia Davis, Emo Philips, Diane Morgan and Reeves and Mortimer.

A spokesperson for Birmingham Comedy Festival said: “When we first discussed starting this award, we did fleetingly wonder if we might run out of acts.

“But ten years later, and such a thought seems utterly ridiculous, as the region continues to be a home to so many talented comedians, whose inventiveness, charisma and originality continues to inspire newcomers.”

Birmingham Comedy Festival runs from October 4 to 13 and features Sarah Millican, Milton Jones, Rachel Parris, George Lewis, Richard Blackwood and more.
