Worcestershire libraries reveal most borrowed books of 2020

Rob George 5th Jan, 2021

IF YOUR New Year’s resolution for 2021 is to read more, the most borrowed books of 2020 may give you some inspiration on where to start.

Lee Child’s Past Tense tops the list for the second consecutive year after it was borrowed a total of 443 times. It was closely followed by Mark Billingham’s Their Little Secret with 426 issues and then Dead at First Sight by Peter James (413 issues).

For younger audiences, Liz Pichon’s Spectacular School Trip was the most borrowed children’s title in 2020 with 190 issues. David Walliams certainly proved popular with Worcestershire’s younger readers in 2020. His book The Ice Monster took second place with 180 issues, with two more Walliams titles (The Beast of Buckingham Palace and Slime) taking third and fourth places.

Coun Lucy Hodgson, Cabinet Member with Responsibility for Communities, said: “It’s always interesting to look back and see which page-turners proved popular in the past 12 months.”

“It’s been great to see that the joy of reading has been there for so many people in Worcestershire, especially during a particularly difficult year with the Covid pandemic. I’d encourage anyone who hasn’t already, to look into what our Digital Library Hub can offer. The magic of a good book really is there for everyone.”

One real success story of the past 12 months was the launch of the county’s Digital Library Hub, taking the magic of reading online.

The Unexpected return of Josephine Fox by Claire Gradidge, topped the adult e-book charts with Andy Shepherd’s Boy Who Grew Dragons taking  top spot for the county’s junior readers. The top teen title was One by Sarah Crossan.

The Digital Library Hub provides the county’s library customers with online content available to access from home.

This includes a wider selection of eBooks, eAudio and eMagazines, free webinars to support job seekers and business start-ups, online connect bubbles and a range of online events and activities for families and children to enjoy together.
