Work on Upton-upon-Severn's new four-arm congestion-busting roundabout now complete

WORK on the new congestion-busting roundabout near Upton-upon-Severn has now been completed.

The four-arm roundabout, which also boasts better routes and crossing access for pedestrians and cyclists, was constructed by Worcestershire County Council and replaces the previous A38/A4104 staggered junction.

Ecological elements were covered as part of planning and were taken into consideration whilst the roundabout works were in progress.

Newt culverts under the road and gulley bypasses, as well as bat lighting have been included as part of the work.

Coun Marc Bayliss, Worcestershire County Council’s Cabinet Member with Responsibility for Economy, Infrastructure and Skills, said: “I’m delighted the roundabout has been completed and vehicles are able to use it.

“Around 16,000 vehicles a day use this route, so this was an important project to help relieve congestion and improve journey times, whilst also improving provision for walking and cycling.”

The route is important for commuters travelling from the M5/M50 motorways and provides access to destinations such as the ‘Three Counties Showground’ and the Malvern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).

It will also benefit a multitude of events usually held in Upon-upon-Severn and the surrounding area throughout the year.

The previous junction was a congestion hotspot, particularly during peak times and during local events. Queuing would build up on both the A38 and A4104.

Worcestershire County Council identified improvements were needed at the junction to alleviate issues and to provide more efficient traffic flows. The new roundabout also makes it better for users.

Facilities for pedestrians and cyclist have also been improved with the provision of crossing locations on all arms of the roundabout and 3metre-wide shared footway/cycleways.

In spring, final landscaping works will take place and verges will have three different grass seed sown across the banks.
