Work to start to improve M5 junction congestion

Malvern Editorial 19th Apr, 2018   0

WORK will soon begin to transform an historic bottleneck on the outskirts of the city as part of a major upgrade which aims to cut congestion for long-suffering Worcester commuters.

Highways England is delivering improvements to M5 junction 6, leading to more reliable and safer journeys for people and businesses by reducing congestion and increasing capacity on the road.

Initial work began earlier this year, with the main work starting on April 30 until next spring.

As part of the work, the roundabout off the M5 at junction 6 will be widened as will the slip roads and all the approaches with the addition of an extra lane.

Installing two new sets of traffic signals at the junction at the A4538 Pershore Lane South and the A449 will help improve journey time reliability by reducing congestion and queuing, particularly during peak times.

Highways chiefs will also be putting new road markings, signs and street lighting in place to make it safer around the junction.

It is part of a package of work, including similar work already completed at junctions 5 and 7 and city drivers using junction six may experience delays and local routes will be busier than usual while this important work takes place.

Narrow lanes and a 30mph speed limit will be in place while off-peak lane closures will be required as work increases to allow access to work areas and traffic will be monitored at these times.

As work is taking place on the slip roads there will also be a 50mph speed limit on the M5 carriageway for around a half-mile section on the northbound and southbound approaches to the junction.

City residents can find out more about the work with a series of events with the first being staged tomorrow from midday to 8pm at Tesco on Mill Wood Drive in Warndon with two further events at the Hive on Friday from 1pm to 8pm and Saturday from 10am to 4pm.
