Young Colwall players to depict moving educational fight in latest play

Malvern Editorial 22nd Oct, 2023   0

THE young Colwall players will be performing a moving tale of women fighting for education and self-determination in Jessica Swale’s play ‘Bluestockings’.

The play will take place at Colwall Village Hall and will run at 7.30pm between Thursday and Saturday, November 2 and 4.

It is set against the larger backdrop of women’s suffrage in Cambridge in 1896.

The Girton girls study ferociously and match their male peers’ grade for grade, but when the men graduate, the women are denied degrees and go home unqualified and unmarriageable due to their stigma of being a ‘bluestocking.’

Tess Moffat and her fellow first years are determined to win the right to graduate but face hurdles and distractions including love, the cruelty of the class divide or the strength of the opposition.

Tickets are £12 each or £6 for under 16s.
