Younger faces sought at Repair Café

ORGANISERS at the town’s Repair Café have urged more youngsters to take advantage of the service stressing it could save them a lot of money.

The next event held at Malvern Cube on Saturday (February 15) will be open to usual clients as always, but has also been dubbed ‘Youth Extra’ in bid to encourage more children and teens.

Organiser Chris Dyer said the team of repairers had plenty of experience fixing toys and technology from skateboards and scooters to TVs and tablets.

He said: “The trouble is repairing things has an image problem. It’s associated with being old fashioned, for poor people or just not cool as far as the youth go.

“We obviously dispute that entirely so we’re running the next event with a Youth Extra part to show what the Repair Café can do for them.

“Hopefully they will leave and go away asking their dads why they can’t fix stuff.”

Chris said in the past problems had included a BlackBerry phone with tanning lotion spilt onto it and a Nintendo DS gaming console which had a broken hinge, both of which were repaired successfully.

He added even if the items could not be fixed on the day, they could be taken away to be repaired or clients would be given advice on what steps they could take themselves to save a costly fee by taking things back to the shop.

“It’s best to think of us as a clinic and not a hospital. We can certainly diagnose what the problem is which could save people a lot of money.

“You can sometimes take things to the shop and pay £35 just to hand it over the counter let alone getting something done about it.”
