MALVERN pupil Sarah-Jane Ollis was part of the Hereford and Worcestershire county squad to take medals in the prestigious Mason Trophy.

Sarah-Jane (The Chase School, Malvern) and Lottie (Royal Grammar School, Worcester) teamed up with Hannah Sahota (Bromsgrove School), and Nikita Gottardt-Mills (Ridgeway Academy, Redditch) to finish third in the junior girls’ 4×100 metres relay in the competition in hot and humid conditions at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham last Saturday.

The quartet’s time was an English Schools entry standard time of 51.30secs.

The relay team were among the medal winners representing the Hereford and Worcestershire team in the Inter-County Schools event for junior (year 8/9) and intermediate (year 10/11) age groups.

These athletes were selected following on from schools, district and county competitions.

Competing against nine other counties, Hereford and Worcestershire recorded three gold medals, three silver and four bronze.

Gold medal winners were Chris McLeod (Woodrush HS, Wythall), Emma Sherwood (Hagley RCHS) and Orla Walker (Bromsgrove School).

Chris won his intermediate boys’ 3,000m in a fantastic 8mins 57.95secs – a qualifying time for the English Schools Athletics Association Championships – while Emma took gold in the intermediate girls’ high jump clearing 1.66 metres (another English Schools entry standard) and Orla was first in the Intermediate girls’ 1,500 metres steeplechase (5mins 37.50secs) .

Silver medals went to Matt Burke (Bromsgrove Prep School), who threw 31.58 metres to place second in the junior boys’ hammer, Kaisan Tulloch (John Masefield HS, Ledbury) in the intermediate boys’ triple jump with a leap of 13.20m, and Josh Pearson (St Augustine’s, Redditch) in the intermediate boys’ 400m in a time of 50.61secs.

Sam Jones (North Bromsgrove HS) in the junior boys’ 200m (23.81secs), Lily Saxon (Alvechurch MS) in the junior girls’ 1,500m (4mins 41.11secs), and Matt Griffin (Arrowvale RSA Academy, Redditch) in the junior boys 80m hurdles (12.47secs) all took bronze medals.

A total of eight ESAA entry standards were achieved for Hereford & Worcestershire.

The performances from the Mason Trophy help the selectors decide which athletes will be invited to represent Hereford and Worcestershire Schools at the New Balance English Schools’ Track & Field Championships, early in July.
