Colwall and Malvern Hockey Club claim first point of new season

Malvern Editorial 25th Oct, 2016   0

COLWALL and Malvern Firsts picked up their first point of the new West Clubs Women’s League Severn Division One campaign with a 2-2 draw with fellow strugglers Cheltenham Fourths.

After a delayed start due to a missing umpire, C&M went behind early on as the visitors scrambled the ball home after a loose ball broke free in the area.

C&M had several players making their first appearance of the season, including a debut for Becca Boulton who settled in quickly in the middle of pitch and was soon passing the ball around with pinpoint accuracy.

Her marauding runs down the right were a constant threat and she soon played a part in the host’s equaliser.

After some good work from Boulton, the ball rebounded off Jackie Styles into the path of Nicky Glover who guided the ball home.
Cheltenham however fought back and continued to press C&M’s back line, and despite the best efforts of Pippa Harris and Jenn Holeman, they scored their second going into half-time.

After the interval, C&M started on the front foot with India Timmermans dominating the left wing and their equaliser soon came when an accurate ball from Becky Lewis found Styles who deflected the ball home.

The hosts continued to go for the winning goal but missed good chances to score a third. Cheltenham also pressed for a winner but their attack was well marshalled by defender Sarah Richardson and keeper Melinda Bennett.
