CRICKET: Pears sign ODI record breaker Van Beek for One-Day Cup and Championship

WORCESTERSHIRE have signed record-breaking all-rounder Logan van Beek for the final five group matches in the Metro Bank One Day Cup and the first two LV=Insurance Championship matches next month.

Van Beek created history when he smashed an unprecedented 30 runs for the Netherlands in an ODI Super Over in the ICC World Cup qualifier against the West Indies in Harare in June.

The 32-year-old struck Jason Holder for 4, 6, 4, 6, 6, 4 in an astonishing display of hitting and then dismissed both West Indies batters to seal victory for his side.

It was a performance which attracted worldwide headlines, and Worcestershire are delighted to have secured his services.

Van Beek was born in Christchurch, New Zealand and represented the Black Caps at the 2010 ICC Under-19 World Cup.

He qualifies to play for the Netherlands as he holds a Dutch passport and is the grandson of former Black Caps and Windies Test cricketer Sammy Guillen.

Van Beek has previous experience in county cricket through playing for Derbyshire in 2019 and 2021.

He has appeared in 25 ODIs and 23 T20Is for the Netherlands but also has an impressive record in first class cricket, primarily for Canterbury and Wellington in New Zealand.

He has taken 188 wickets in 70 first class games with a best of 6-19 and also made 1783 runs at 23.15.

Van Beek said: “I’m really looking forward to playing a part in Worcestershire’s push for honours in two competitions.

“A lot of New Zealanders have played with distinction for the Club, including Michael Bracewell and Mitchell Santner in the T20 this summer, and I hope I can play a successful part.

“I know I got a lot of headlines for the Super Over against the West Indies, but there is more to my game, and I hope to be able to contribute with bat and ball.

“Worcestershire are well placed in the Championship for promotion, and it would be great to help them return to Division One.”

Head Coach Alan Richardson said: “We are delighted to secure the services of Logan, who will strengthen our squad for the season’s finale.

“He has experience of conditions in this country with Derbyshire and has shown he is a most capable performer in red ball and white ball cricket.

“His Super Over against the West Indies was astonishing, but there is so much more to his game than that in all skill sets.”

Van Beek is available for the One Day Cup games with Gloucestershire (home), Warwickshire (home), Northamptonshire Steelbacks (away), Derbyshire Falcons (away) and Sussex Sharks (home), plus the two Championship games with Glamorgan and Durham at New Road.
