Hardinges stars as Green claim comfortable win

MARK Hardinges’ all-round efforts helped Barnards Green to a seven-wicket victory over Wellington in Birmingham League Division One.

Hardinges took 4-11 as the Shropshire side were skittled for just 140 and then hit an unbeaten 32 off 19 balls, while George Rhodes made 62 not out, as the hosts chased down the target with almost 20 overs remaining.

After Green won the toss and elected to bowl, Hardinges removed Sam Lloyd and Scott De Weymarn who could only manage five runs between them.

He also grabbed the crucial wicket of opener Neil Edwards who had raced to 57 off 33 balls, before he skied one to Andrew Curtis at cover. This brought Wellington captain Wagner to the crease, but he could only watch as batsmen fell at the other end.

First Andy Ford bowled Daniel Vaughan for 7 before Rishe Umasuthan produced a fine spell of swing bowling. Overseas all-rounder Trevor Garwe was caught by Ford at slip for 1 and Chris Sheperd was trapped lbw for the same score. Wagner (24) himself became Umasuthan’s third victim, again trapped in front, as Wellington slumped from 97-4 to 103-7.

Matt Stinson and Anthony O’Connor were also dismissed before Tim Dean became the final man out after a plucky 26.

Because of the early end of the innings the teams resumed after a short break with the Green to face 15 overs before tea.

Despite losing Andrew Curtis for a duck, Green made an impressive start as they scored 22 off the opening two overs. Alex Hepburn was bowled out without putting a run on the board, but Alex Milton joined George Rhodes, who signalled his intent with a huge six off a free hit.

The pair continued to bat confidently as Rhodes moved Green past 50 with a fine cover drive for four.

The hosts made numerous changes to their bowling attack in a bid to break the partnership, which eventually came when Milton was given out lbw for 36.

But this failed to derail Green as they powered to victory with Hardinges’ rapid innings.
