Jenkins to take on two-time World Grand Prix champion Wade in tournament opener

LEDBURY darting ace Terry Jenkins will take on James Wade in the opening round of the PDC World Grand Prix in Ireland this weekend.

Played at the Citywest Hotel in Dublin, the seven-day tournament is played in a sets format where players must start and finish on a double and has total prize fund of £400,000.

Jenkins, a two-time Grand Prix finalist, will take on The Machine, a two-time Grand Prix champion, on Sunday (October 2) with the winner facing Gerwyn Price or Benito van de Pas in the second round on Tuesday (October 4).

The 53-year-old’s first final appearance was in 2006 when he lost 7-4 to Phil Taylor before losing to Wade 6-3 the following year.

On that day, Wade wrapped up the first set with three straight legs and claimed the second after capitalising on Jenkins’ 18 missed darts at a double.

A 124 finish on the bullseye got Jenkins up and running but The Machine moved up a gear to take a 3-1 lead, including an 11-darter in the last leg.

Jenkins won the fifth set to reduce the arrears but he paid the price for two missed darts to level the scores as Wade took out double 18 to move 4-2 ahead.

This proved a pivotal moment as Wade won the next set with a 74 finish on a double ten in the fifth leg before Jenkins edged the eighth set to keep himself in the contest.

However, Wade was in no mood to let his chance of victory slip away as he calmly landed double top to secure his first Grand Prix title.

The World Grand Prix will be shown on Sky Sports.
