Jones is determined to finish season on a high

MANAGER Les Jones has got his eyes on a prize as Malvern Town look to finish their season with a series of cup finals.

Town ended their West Midlands Regional League campaign with a 0-0 draw to Bewdley Town last month to finish in the top half of the table.

However, with still three cup competitions to play for, including a Smedley Crooke Cup final, Jones has urged his players to not rest on their laurels.

“Obviously we are pleased to finish our league programme and we have done really well since Christmas, but we just need to keep it going in the cup competitions,” Jones said.

“We will play the winner of Pilkington and Bromsgrove Sporting in the final of the Smedley Crook Cup, but before that we have got Bewdley Town in the semi-final of the Worcester Infirmary Cup where we could play either Ledbury or Pershore in the final and we are also in the last 16 of the West Midlands League Cup where we will face Black Country Rangers, so there is a lot to look forward to.

“We may not pick up any silverware come the end of the season, but at least we can try and finish on a high with a couple of cup finals.”

Jones said he also believes his side’s league finish has provided a platform for next season as they look to challenge for promotion.

“Considering we used different goalkeepers for our first seven games of the season and we only won two games in our opening eight games, I think we have finished in a respectable mid-table position,” he said.

“I also think the Langland Stadium has become of the least favoured places to come. Since Christmas we have beaten Lye Town who were favourites to win the league and Black Country Rangers who are a top five side, so we have become a side no one wants to play at home, which is great.

“I think this season will be a good platform for next year. I just hope we can keep this squad together and hopefully attract some more players.

“But there is certainly a buzz around the club at the minute, which is why we don’t really want the season to end.”
