Jones left purring as Malvern thrash champions Haughmond

MALVERN Town boss Les Jones hailed his team’s performance as tremendous as they hammered West Midlands (Regional) League Premier Division champions Haughmond 5-0.

Two goals from leading scorer Dave Reynolds and one apiece from Harry Wickett, Louis Platt and Nathan Hayward secured the win for the Hillsiders at the HDAnywhere Community Stadium on Saturday.

The victory brought an end to Haughmond’s incredible 31-game unbeaten run in the league which dated back to August 13 last year.

“It was a tremendous performance and we ran out worthy winners,” Jones said.

“We dominated the game from start to finish and the result was just what we needed going into the remaining games of the season.

“We had lost 4-0 at their place earlier in the season but we did not give a good account of ourselves that day.

“However, we’ve turned that around and continue on our quest to finish as high as possible.”

The games come thick and fast for Jones’ side as they entertain second placed Wolverhampton Sporting Community tomorrow (Saturday) knowing victory would move them to within two points of the runners-up spot with three games to go.

Sporting Community had previously beaten the Hillsiders 6-2 in the league in September last year before securing a 6-5 victory in the quarter-finals of the Premier Division Cup a fortnight ago.

“It’s going to take another monumental effort to beat Wolverhampton as they are a really good side,” Jones added.

“But we are full of confidence and looking forward to the game.”

Meanwhile, Malvern crashed out of the Worcester Royal Infirmary Cup at the semi-final stage after losing 1-0 at Stourport Swifts (3-1 on aggregate).
