Late own goal sees Ledbury edge Trysull

LEDBURY Town erased the memory of last month’s thumping away to Trysull as a dramatic own goal gifted them a 2-1 victory over the Wolverhampton side in Division One of the West Midlands Regional League at New Street.

With the 7-1 defeat still fresh in the memory, Paul Mann’s side, who suffered a surprise 3-1 loss at Wolverhampton United last week, were determined to beat the visitors on Saturday.

But the supporters were made to wait as Ledbury failed to take the lead despite countless chances to go ahead, while skipper Ian Merrick saw his 20-yard strike cannon off the crossbar.

Dan Herbert and Jamie Welch were presented with the best of the opportunities to get their side off the mark, but they could not find the back of the net, with the latter hitting the wrong side of the post.

With the scores locked at 0-0 at half-time, Trysull began to believe they could snatch an unlikely victory, with Town dominating.

Despite the frustration, Ledbury remained patient and they were rewarded on the hour mark when Tom Boyle broke the deadlock.

But, against the run of play, Town’s fears were realised when Edward Cowen rolled the ball past keeper Luke Ledbury to level the game.

The goal seemed to knock the stuffing out of the hosts as Trysull start to get more of the ball and almost took the lead late on when Jonathan Patrick wriggled his way through the defence before firing over the bar.

However, with three minutes left on the clock, Ledbury received some unexpected assistance as confusion in the box saw the opposition put the ball into their own net to the delight of the home fans.

With their tails up, Town came close to finishing the match in style as Herbert’s shot rattled the upright.

The victory sees the Herefordshire side, who face Wyrley on Saturday, move above Trysull into fifth place.
