Late winner from debutant Pinder gives Malvern Town cup victory

Malvern Editorial 26th Jan, 2017   0

DEBUTANT Matthew Pinder made a great first impression in Malvern Town colours after his last minute strike gave his new team victory in the second round of the West Midlands (Regional) Premier Division Cup.

Striker Pinder, signed from Stourport Swifts, came off the bench and scored in the dying moments to give Malvern a 2-1 win over Shifnal Town.

After the game, the 19-year-old took to Twitter and said: “Always good to get the last minute winner on your debut.”

But despite dominating large parts of the game, the Hillsiders were forced to do things the hard way after going 1-0 behind early in the second half when Shifnal took the lead.

But Malvern got back level through Nathan Hayward’s penalty just after 60 minutes when Dave Reynolds was brought down in the box.

It looked the game was heading to extra time but then Pinder struck from a tight angle in the 92nd minute to give Malvern a place in the quarter-finals where they will face Wolverhampton Sporting.

Malvern return to league action on Saturday when they take on Dudley Sports at the HDAnywhere Community Stadium (3pm).
