Ledbury ease fears of drop with big win

LEDBURY Town eased any relegation fears with a commanding 4-1 home win over West Midlands Regional League Division One basement boys Wolverhampton United.

Goals from Ryan Jones, Tom Watkins and a Jamie Welch brace secured a much needed three points for Paul Mann’s side, who move up to 12th in the league.

Carl Turner halved the arrears at 2-1 for the visitors, but it was to no avail as United remain rooted to the bottom of the table.

The hosts came into the game with no wins in their previous eight outings but made the perfect start after 13 minutes when Mitchell Elliot set up Jones and the reserves striker made no mistake to drill home.

Ledbury’s lead was doubled nine minutes later as Terry Shaw denied Tom Boyle’s free-kick but the rebound fell to Watkins who fired home from inside the box.

Wolves started to grow as the half went on and Andy Matthews had to be alert to block David Maher from what would have been a certain goal.

Two minutes after the restart and the visitors got their goal and a renewed sense of hope as Turner slipped the ball home.

But Wolverhampton’s joy was short lived as six minutes later Welch’s header hit the bar but the striker reacted quickest to bundle to ball home, despite the best efforts of the visiting defence on the goal line.

Mann’s team secured the points with 15 minutes to go and it was yet more dangerous play down the wing from Gavin Walton who set up Welch to dispatch his second of the afternoon.

Town will be looking to secure back-to-back league wins for the first time this season when they host sixth placed Wyrley at New Street on Saturday (March 29).
