Ledbury youngsters overcome Wem

LEDBURY Town’s youngsters stood up to the task as they helped their side secure an impressive 2-1 victory over Wem Town in Division One of the West Midlands Regional League on Saturday.

With the absence of several key first team players, manager Paul Mann decided to give a number of players from the club’s reserve team the chance to shine at New Street.

And they did not disappoint as Town took the game to the visitors, while 17-year-old keeper Elliot Watts produced a string of fine saves to keep Wem at bay in the opening stages.

The away side were looking threatening early on as Watts was forced into action on a number of occasions while Josh Gamble fired wide from close range.

Ledbury upped the ante at the end of the half but they were unable to break the deadlock before the break.

The fans’ patience was rewarded though, with two goals in quick succession at the start of the second half. Dan Herbert gave Ledbury the lead before Wem hit straight back to level the tie in the 52nd minute.

However, it was the hosts who were beginning to take control of the match and they soon regained the lead. Last week’s hero Tom Boyle was once again on hand to find the back of the net.

Wem almost levelled matters on the 72nd minute as they struck the upright, but that was as close as they came as their comeback hopes were dented when Dave Barnett was sent off.

Ledbury will be keen to continue their superb run of form when they travel to Wolverhampton United on Saturday (3pm).
