Malvern boss frustrated at January washout

MANAGER Les Jones said his “frustrated” Malvern Town players are champing at the bit to return to league action.

Town have not played in the West Midlands Regional League since their impressive 2-0 victory over runaway leaders Lye Town on December 28.

The wet weather has led to a string of postponements this month, including Malvern’s clashes against Smethwick Rangers, Wellington Amateurs and Ellesmere Rangers.

Town managed to get their cup game against Bewdley on last Wednesday, which they lost 3-2.

And Jones is hoping to not fall foul of the weather again as his side take on Ledbury Town at the Langland Stadium tonight (Wednesday, 7.45pm) before hosting struggling Bustleholme on Saturday (3pm).

“It has been really frustrating period for us,” he said. “We have got a mid-week game against Ledbury so we will use that to give players some crucial game-time ready for our league match on Saturday.

“It has been a really difficult past few weeks as we have only been able to do five-a-side sessions as the pitch has been either water-logged or really wet.

“Most of the games were also close to going ahead as they were playable in the morning but then the rain came down in the afternoon so they were called off.

“We are just really keen to get Wednesday’s and then Saturday’s match up and running and hopefully get a couple of wins.”

Jones said he was also hoping to see a much-improved performance from his side, who were edged out against Bewdley last week, when they take on second bottom Bustleholme.

“Bewdley were 2-0 up and then we got it back to 2-2 at half time, but we then gave away a sloppy goal at the start of the second half, which I was really annoyed about,” Jones said.

“The pitch was deteriorating which made it increasingly difficult.

We were the better team and created more chances, but we just could not score the equaliser.

“Bustleholme are second from bottom, so we need to get a win on Saturday as we want to keep moving onwards and upwards.

“We lost to them earlier this season and we were very poor that day, so we need to make sure we are at our best and hopefully we will get the right result. It will be a vital three points for us.”
