MALVERN suffered a seven-try thumping to high-flying Silhillians in a 48-13 defeat in the Midlands Two West (South) in Solihull on Saturday.
With some enforced changes due to injury and non-availability, Malvern made the journey to second-placed Silhillians knowing they would have to put in a battling performance.
But the hosts started with an expected high-tempo as they quickly won a penalty, which their fly-half converted to open an early lead.
Silhillians then scored their first try of the game when they moved the ball out quickly from a scrum and pierced the Malvern defence to ground.
The Spring Lane outfit replied with a Ben King penalty, but the hosts soon had their second try when they probed and stretched Malvern’s backline score.
The visitors reduced the deficit with another King penalty, but hopes of a fight back were extinguished when the hosts ran in a brace of quick tries before half-time.
The visitors did manage to score before the interval however, when Conor Giggle darted down the right wing and fed debutant Jack Curtis showed his athleticism by dummying three Silhillians players to run in, pegging the score back to 29-13.
After the break, Malvern’s loose kicks failed to find touch, which resulted in the hosts punishing them with two further tries.
Although Malvern started to keep possession and attack more in the latter stages, Silhillians wrapped up the game with another try.
Malvern return to action on Saturday, February 11 when they take on Southam at Spring Lane (kick-off 2.15pm).
