Malvern Town boss Jones has unfinished business in transfer market

MANAGER Les Jones hopes to finalise his Malvern Town squad before the season gets under way next week with an FA Cup extra preliminary round tie at Wolverhampton Casuals.

The Hillsiders have made five acquisitions so far in forwards Kyonn Evans, Ben Evans and Dale Goddard and defenders Jake Willcox and Jay Sauntson.

But, with the new campaign starting on Saturday, August 5, Jones told the Observer he is looking to make a further one or two additions to replace the goals they have lost through Dave Reynolds who made the move to Worcester City earlier in the summer.

“We have got a good squad but I am looking to complete it over the next week,” he said.

“I’d like to bring in an attacking midfielder and ideally I would hope to sign another striker too.

“I have got strikers who can drop into midfielde and vice-versa but it would be nice to have another out and out forward.”

The Hillsiders continue their pre-season schedule on Saturday when they welcome Midland League Premier Division outfit Westfields to the HDAnywhere Community Stadium.

Jones’ side go into the clash against their Herefordshire opponents on the back of Saturday’s 4-3 defeat to higher ranked Coventry Sphinx.

Matthew Turner’s brace got Malvern off to a bright start but Ryan Harkin’s double levelled things up before half time.

A Sphinx trialist then put the visitors ahead before Turner completed his hat-trick to make it 3-3.

However, a late strike from Luke Downes ensured it was Sphinx who came away with victory which left a sour taste in the mouth of Jones.

“I was a little bit disappointed with the result because we threw away a 2-0 lead,” he said.

“But the performance against a team from a higher division was very pleasing and our fitness levels are starting to improve.”
