Malvern Town boss left delighted after 8-0 win

MALVERN Town made amends for a ‘frustrating’ stalemate draw midweek by thrashing Willenhall Town 8-0 on Saturday.

In one of the club’s biggest wins for some time, the Hillsiders kept up their title challenge in the West Midlands (Regional) Premier Division in style.

Top scorer Dave Reynolds had a day to remember netting four goals with fellow striker Bryan Craven scoring twice while Nathan Hughes and Adam Saunston also put their names on the scoresheet.

The massive win was the perfect tonic for Malvern who were held to a 0-0 draw at home to Cradley Town last Wednesday – a result which meant they failed to fully close the gap on league leaders Haughmond.

Malvern stay third in the table, ten points adrift of Haughmond with one game in hand.

Manager Les Jones said he was delighted with the team’s performance and admitted making a change to his side’s formation.

“It was a super performance – we played some really good football against a decent side,” he said.

“We slightly changed the system beforehand by putting two strikers (Reynolds and Craven) up front together rather than for the three we usually go for and we’re delighted it worked well.

“It took us a while to get going but after the first half hour we played some lovely football and scored great goals.

“We were disappointed with the draw at home on Wednesday to Cradley but they won 6-1 over the weekend which means our 0-0 draw looks even better now.”

Malvern, who have scored 64 goals already this campaign – only bettered by Haughmond, will hope to continue their scoring ways when they travel to Staffordshire to face Stone Old Alleynians on Saturday.

Their last visit to Yarnfield Lane saw Malvern win 5-4 a match which Jones labelled afterwards as ‘bizarre’.

Jones added: “Stone Old Alleynians are a tricky side and it is a lovely surface to play on up there which hopefully will suit our play. We are hoping for another good result.”
