Malvern Town go top of the table with victory over basement boys Wellington Amateurs

MALVERN Town moved to the summit of the West Midlands (Regional) League Premier Division table with a 3-1 victory over rock bottom Wellington Amateurs.

It took just eight minutes for the Hillsiders to take the lead at the HDAnywhere Community Stadium last night (Wednesday) when Kyonn Evans was on hand to slot home after Shaun Smith’s shot was parried by Ben Czerepaninec.

And five minutes later the hosts doubled their lead as Josh Hunt cut through the Wellington defence before playing in Matthew Turner who made no mistake in finding the back of the net.

But midway through the half the visitors were awarded a route back into the game when Dene Whittal-Williams gave away a penalty which was converted.

Despite some pressure from Wellington, the Hillsiders managed to restore their two-goal cushion 20 minutes into the second half after some good hold-up play by Evans allowed Lewis Platt to tuck the ball home at the first attempt.

The visitors continued to push but Les Jones’ Malvern held on to secure the three points and go top of the table.

Up next for the Hillsiders is the visit of sixth-placed Cradley Town on Saturday.
