New skipper Hale relishing Malvern captaincy role

Malvern Editorial 15th Aug, 2017   0

WINGER Tom Hale has taken over the captain’s armband for Malvern ahead of the upcoming Midlands Two West (South) campaign.

Hale replaces Luke Milton as the new skipper after being formally appointed by director of rugby Rob Cook.

He has played for the Spring Lane side for many years, starting out in the minis before making his way up the various age groups and into the first XV.

Last season Hale was the club’s leading try-scorer and tormented defences throughout the league with his power, pace and brute force.

“Being asked to captain the side is a real honour, said Hale.

“I have played for the club for many years and I am really enjoying my rugby.

“To see so many new and returning players at pre-season bodes well for the new season.

“The effort being put in will pay dividends once the season starts.

“I hope I can continue the great work of Luke Milton in developing the younger players in the squad as well as working closely with Rob Cook and the rest of the coaching team to take Malvern to the next level.”

Cook added: “Tom was the stand-out candidate for the role based on his performances over the last few seasons.”

The Malvern chief also highlighted his delight in the fact there is plenty of competition in almost every position and that he will have to pick a team rather than the team and matchday squad virtually picking itself.

“To see more than 40 players attend pre-season at one stage or another whilst in the middle of the holiday season shows the enthusiasm and commitment of players for the new season,” he said.

Malvern take on Nuneaton in a pre-season friendly on Saturday before travelling to Cleobury the following weekend (August 26).

The season begins on Saturday, September 23 with a home clash against Kenilworth.
