Promotion joy for Malvern

Malvern Editorial 30th Apr, 2018   0

MALVERN have secured promotion to Midlands One West after a resounding 53-12 victory over Crewe & Nantwich in a play-off on Saturday.

The Midlands Two West (South) runners-up started well at their own Spring Lane ground and opened the scoring when Tom Hale fed the ball to Ben King on the overlap to go over in the corner.

Hale was then next to go over in the corner after the ball was released following a scrum.

Luke Milton, om his 150th appearance for Malvern, was proving influential and handed the ball to Dan Batty who powered through to score.

Rob Cook converted as the visitors, who finished as Midlands Two West (North) runners-up, looked dead and buried at this stage of the game.

Not long after they were further behind when Frankie Purcell touched down to give Cook an easy two-point conversion.

As half-time approached Liam Roleston charged through to score with Cook’s conversion giving Malvern a 31-0 cushion at the break.

After the break Malvern continued their scoring spree with Cook slotting over a penalty.

A rampant Malvern showed no mercy in their bid to secure promotion as Milton danced past four tackles to go over.

Cook again kicked the conversion.

Eventually Crewe got on the scoresheet with a penalty but Malvern’s response was immediate with Jack Longley shimmying through to score.

Cook added the extras.

Although Crewe pulled a score back from a well worked move after a penalty, it was Malvern who finished with panache as Cook bagged the final try of the game.

Up next for promoted Malvern is a North Midlands Shield semi-final against Shropshire side Whitchurch.
