No reward for luckless Town

AN OWN goal from Joe Endacott denied Malvern Town an impressive result at AFC Bridgnorth as they pushed the league leaders all the way on Saturday.

Les Jones’ side caused Bridgnorth problems throughout and created numerous chances to edge ahead in the West Midlands Regional League clash.

But disaster stuck three minutes into the second half when Endacott diverted the ball into his own net. The defender had a chance to make amends but he headed over as Malvern slipped an agonising defeat.

The hosts were on a run of seven straight wins, but Town arrived in determined mood to end their run as they went straight on the front foot. In the opening minute Lee Hooper’s cross was fumbled by Bridgnorth’s keeper, Chris Cook, but no-one was able to get to the loose ball.

The home side’s first chance came on the 12th minute when Liam Bood shot wide, but it was Malvern who were creating most of the opportunities in the opening period.

Town’s best efforts came in the final 15minutes of the half as Matt Turner’s volley cannoned off the crossbar before Kirk Layton’s shot hit a defender before being cleared off the line.

Despite Malvern’ dominance, Bridgnorth almost snatched the lead just before the interval when Karl Griffiths was put through, but Chas Weaver was equal to it.

Town began the second half in the same vein as they went on the attack, but they suffered a huge set back on the 48th minute. After the ball was played across Malvern’s box, Weaver dived and got his fingertips to it, but unfortunately Endacott was in the wrong place at the wrong time as he slid the ball into his own net.

This gave Bridgnorth an unlikely lead, but Malvern refused to give in and had a couple of great chances to level the tie on the hour mark. Firstly, Hooper almost got on the end of James Lush’s cross before Endacott headed over from the resulting corner as the table toppers held on.
