GEORGE Rhodes has been appointed captain of Barnards Green’s first team as the club makes a series of changes on and off the field.

The talented batsmen, who made 747 runs last season, takes over from Andy Ford who has stepped down as skipper due to work commitments.

Ford will remain at the Malvern-based side, who have been boosted by the return of club captain Phil Harris after he spent two seasons playing in Wales.

Green have also made two notable additions to their first team squad, with the signings of Worcestershire CCC academy all-rounder Josh Tongue, who joins from Bromyard, and Barnt Green ace Nathan Newport. The top-order batsman’s decision to join the the club means there are now three sons of former County players in their ranks.

The club’s first and second sides will continue to play the Birmingham and District Premier Cricket League, while the third and fourth teams take on the challenge of Worcestershire County League Division Four.

Green have also received some good news off the field after it was local firm Inline Engineering of Clifton House Spring Lane South agreed a third year deal as main sponsor of the club.

However, bosses at Green are planning to host a series of fund-raising events throughout the year to support both the senior and junior teams for the 2015 season, while they are still looking to add to its sponsors.

Work is also continuing to add strength and depth to the playing as they are welcoming new players in the area to join any of their five adult teams.

Senior winter nets start today (Wednesday) at Malvern College between 8pm and 10pm, while junior winter session begin on Thursday, March 12 at the college, with nets for u10s (6pm-7pm) and u11s to u13s (7pm-8pm).

The junior section, which runs teams from u9s upwards, boasts 2014 County Champions as last season the U11s were T20 9-a-side winners.
