Spot-kick misery sees Town crash out

A LAST-minute penalty from Danny Forrest saw Malvern Town crash out of the FA Vase as Walsall Wood sealed a dramatic 3-2 victory at the HDanywhere Community Stadium.

The match on Saturday appeared to be heading for extra time after Dave Reynolds got Malvern back on level terms with an 88th minute goal.

But in the dying seconds, Walsall were awarded a spot-kick, which Forrest coolly dispatched to send his side into the next round.

Malvern also suffered a set back before kick off when Bryan Craven had to be helped off the field after twisting his knee in the warm up.

This seemed to disrupt Malvern as they went behind after 15 minutes, with a goal from Dan Holgate.

Despite the blow, Town hit straight back almost immediately when Joe Leighton headed home Reynolds’ cross.

Both sides created few chances after the two quickfire goals before Malvern keeper Charlie Weaver produced a fine double save on the 38th minute.

This looked to be enough to keep the score level at half time, but with a minute to go before the interval, the visitors edged ahead. Holgate skipped past two Malvern defenders before crossing the ball to Ben Evans to apply the finish.

The goal led Malvern manager Les Jones to make three substitutions in the first 15 minutes of the second half in a bid to find a response.

Among those included Dan Herbert who was presented with an opportunity on the hour mark, but he could only side foot the ball into the keeper’s arms after Reynolds threaded it through.

Walsall were then reduced to ten men on the 65th minute when Harry Harris was brandished a straight red card after kicking out at a player. Unfortunately, though, the extra man advantage only lasted five minutes as Leighton picked up an injury.

Malvern continued to stay on top and eventually got their reward. With two minutes left on the clock, Herbert played the ball to Reynolds whose shot from an acute angle flew into the net.

However, just when it appeared Town had forced the match into extra time, Walsall scored the winner. Kirk Reynolds was adjudged to have fouled Walsall’s left winger in the box and Forrest stepped up to score from the spot.
