'Squad can cope with fixture pile up' - Jones

MALVERN Town boss Les Jones believes his squad are more than capable of dealing with the fixture backlog which sees his side face five league games in the space of two weeks.

After last weekend’s West Midlands (Regional) League Premier Division clash at Black Country Rangers was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch, Malvern now face a busy fixture list over the next fortnight.

Wellington Amateurs are the visitors to the HDAnywhere Stadium this Saturday (February 13) before they entertain Bewdley Town on Tuesday, February 16.

Malvern then face a trip to Dudley Town the following Saturday before another home game against Smethwick Rangers on Tuesday, February 27.

To complete the busy period, league leaders Shawbury United make the trip down to Malvern on the final Saturday of the month but manager Les Jones insists his squad has the ability to cope.

“I am sure the lads can manage the busy fixture list,” he said. “It’s going to be difficult but we have got a big squad so hopefully we will keep the same players out during that time.”

Last season, Malvern finished on 78 points, claiming a fifth place spot, and with Jones hoping for FA Cup qualification once again, he told the Observer the run-in is crucial.

“I’m not going to say it’s make or break for us but we got some really important games over the next two weeks,” he said.

“It’s good that the majority of our games are at home as it means we are not travelling so much.

“Obviously having the game at the weekend postponed was disappointing for us but there’s nothing you can do about it.

“Our groundsman is working on the pitch every week which is exceptional so it is onwards and upwards.

“The main target is to better last season’s point tally, that’s what it’s all about, so hopefully we can get some good results.”
