MALVERN College student Alex Worrallo says she is looking forward to representing her country after being selected for this year’s School Games.

Seventeen year-old Alex has been chosen to represent England Girls White in hockey at the national multi-sport event which takes place at Loughborough and Sheffield from tomorrow (Thursday) to Sunday.

Alex, who trains at Stourport Hockey Club, is one of four athletes from Worcestershire who will be competing at the four-day spectacular.

She joins Abigail Watkins, 14, and Cerys Preston, 15, who are representing Wales in fencing and hockey respectively while Sian Bobrowska, 15, is representing England in judo.

Speaking ahead of the games, Alex said: “I am very happy to be selected and I am looking forward to the opportunity to represent England Whites.”

Fellow Malvern youngster Lucy Walton from Malvern St James Girls School is also competing in the event for the England Blue hockey team.

This year’s games will see 1,600 athletes compete across 12 sports, seven of which include disability disciplines, and is supported by National Lottery funding from Sport England and delivered by the Youth Sport Trust.

Eleven of the events will take place at Loughborough University while all swimmers will compete at Ponds Forge International Sports Centre in Sheffield on Saturday.

The young athletes will experience the excitement of competing at the highest level at the School Games and will live within the Olympic-style Athletes’ Village, attend spectacular opening and closing ceremonies as well as performing in front of thousands of people.

There is a full education programme for the athletes running throughout the event which aims to give them an insight on life at the very highest level of sporting competition.
