Team spirit holds the key for Town as new season nears

MANAGER Les Jones has said excitement is building at Malvern Town ahead of the 2014/15 campaign after the bulk of last season’s squad committed their futures to the club.

James Lush, Louis Loader and top scorer Lee Hooper are just some of the players to agree to stay at Malvern for the upcoming West Midlands Regional League campaign.

Jones said their commitment was a big confidence boost for a club which does not pay its players, but he believes their decision has been made easier by the amount of work which has gone on since owners Chris Pinder and Ted Grizzell arrived at the HDanywhere Community Stadium.

“Having made a fine finish to last season and with the all the improvements going on off the pitch they can see that the club is on a journey,” he said. “They are local lads, so they all want to be apart of it.

“There always is a temptation to move to a club which pays its players, but they have all re-signed, which is great news.

“The one thing we have at the club – and we had this last season as well – is a tremendous spirit and that has only been enhanced by the off the field activities.

“We’ve strengthened our coaching staff as well, so the club has got a good buzz about it at the moment and we are looking forward to the build-up to the season.”

One player who will not be at Town next season is Lewis Platt as Jones confirmed he has agreed to move to Worcester Raiders, but the Town boss insisted they are still looking to strengthen their squad as preparations build ahead of next season.

“Lewis was on the fringes of breaking into the first team last season, but he has decided to move on as he wanted more football,” Jones said.

“I am disappointed to lose him as he was a good prospect, but he was one out of 18 and we are certainly going to have more signings, so we will be in a good position.

“It’s obviously all about match fitness at the moment, but I am keen to look at some new players in pre-season and then start to nail down the squad for next season.”
