CRICKETER Georgia Hennessy rounded off an impressive year with bat and ball by claiming a prestigious sporting prize.

The 17-year-old, who plays for Barnards Green Cricket Club (BGCC) in Malvern, was named Young Female Sports Person of the Year at the 2013 Herefordshire and Worcestershire Sports Awards.

The talented teenager was among a number of sportsmen and women to be recognised at the ceremony at Sixways Stadium.

Hennessy’s achievement comes after a stellar season for Barnards Green, which notably saw her become the first female cricketer to hit a century in the Birmingham League as she produced a match-winning 114no.

Her performances helped her to secure a place in the England u19 women’s cricket team which toured the United Arab Emirates, scoring 113 in her first game. She was also selected as part of the Emerging Player Programme for Worcestershire County Ladies.

Andy Lamb, chairman of the cricket committee at BGCC, said Hennessy’s latest award was testament to her hard work to improve her game.

“It is hugely well deserved. Georgia has progressed right through the junior set up and into senior cricket and she has gone on to play for England,” he said.

“She has worked very hard at her game and has shown a lot of dedication. She has turned out at all levels for the club and has been an example to everyone.

“Hopefully she will go far in the game, but we will try and support her as much as she can as she continues to progress.”

Stephen Brewster, director of the Sports Partnership Herefordshire and Worcestershire, added: “The evening was a fantastic culmination to a very rewarding and stimulating year for sport across the two counties.

“Each one of our winners has shown a commitment and focus that is humbling. The effort they have each put in will, we hope, pay off nationally and internationally in the years to come.”
