Town bag hard earned point

MALVERN Town’s trip to the Black Country saw them return home with a point following a 1-1 draw at Bilston Town Community.

Malvern began on the front foot and had the first chance in the eighth minute when Bryan Craven’s free kick was headed over by Dene Whittal-Williams.

The visitors continued to press and a corner kick was only cleared as far as Whittal-Williams who found Ben Hayes who shot just wide.

Reece King headed wide on 20 minutes before Bilston took the lead on 22 minutes through Mark Habbershaw.

A ball out to the right saw Zac Marriott cross from the byline. Malvern keeper Niall Hacking could only get his fingertips to it, allowing Habbershaw to tap home.

However, Malvern roared back and a ball in from the left found the unmarked Hayes who went through one-on-one with home keeper James Gettings.

Hayes rounded the keeper and slotted the ball home to ensure Town were back on level terms immediately.

Efforts from Matthew Turner for Malvern and Adam Hill for Bilston could have seen further goals but both goalkeepers were in fine form.

A cross from Sam Rathbone saw Turner head over as Malvern went into the break level in this West Midlands Regional League Premier Division clash.

The early chances in the second half fell to Malvern with Turner and Hayes at the forefront of the good work but the teams could not be separated.

Bilston could have walked away with all three points in the closing stages when Habbershaw’s shot hit the post but the draw sees Malvern in sixth spot in the league.

Town host Ellesmere Rangers at the HDanywhere Community Stadium at 3pm on Saturday.
