Town face a tough test in Urn

MALVERN Town will be looking to extend their winning streak at the Langland Stadium to five when they host Bromsgrove Sporting in the quarter-final of the WFA Senior Invitation Urn tonight (Wednesday, 7.45pm).

The visitors will arrive in good form having edged Midland Combination leaders Brocton in a five-goal thriller at Victoria Park on Saturday.

But manager Les Jones said his players are in confident mood and are relishing the cup clash against their Worcestershire rivals.

He is also hoping his side, which is likely to include the returning Lee Barmby and Jamie Lush, can back up their 2-1 victory at Ellesmere Rangers on Saturday, which the Town boss hailed as their best result of the season.

“It was as difficult as it can get at Ellesmere as it was an 190-mile round trip in unfavourable conditions, so it was a terrific performance from the lads,” Jones said.

“We were the better team throughout and I think 3-1 or 4-1 would have reflected the performance, but we also lost Mark Saysell to a red card with ten minutes to go, so we had to be resilient at the end.

“We are beginning to move up the league as we are now in 13th position and we are looking forward to our match against Bromsgrove which should get a big gate.

“Obviously our main priority is to get into the top ten in the league, but the competition offers a nice distraction for us.”

Jones added: “Sporting have just beaten top of the table so they are a very good side and it will be a real test.

“But we have won the last four games at home and I am sure whatever side I select will be looking forward to it.”
