MANAGER Les Jones has urged his side to be more clinical in front of goal when Malvern Town take on local rivals Bromyard Town at the Langland Stadium tonight (Wednesday, 7.45pm).
The Malvern boss said he was frustrated by his side’s finishing on Saturday as they squandered a number of chances against Lye Town before the West Midlands Regional League leaders romped to a convincing 5-0 win.
The heavy defeat follows Town’s 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Sporting Khalsa, but Jones said he was more concerned about his player’s inability to convert when presented with an opportunity to strike.
“It was a case of they took their chances and we didn’t,” he said. “I am just disappointed with the result as a 5-0 defeat looks like a thrashing when a 2-1 or 3-1 defeat would have been a much fairer scoreline.
“We defended pretty well up until 50 minutes and it was a good goal which broke the deadlock.
“But as top sides do they take their chances. They probably had six or seven clear cut chances and they took five whereas we had four or five and we didn’t take any, so we are creating opportunities, but we just need to take them.”
Louis Loader and keeper Ian Hill are doubts for tonight’s clash, but Jones confirmed Lee Hooper, James Lush, Joe Endacott and Lee Barmby will be among those to return.
And he said the players were now keen return to winning ways and claim the bragging rights when they face Bromyard.
“It is a local derby, so it will come down to who wants it more and I am sure it will be a very competitive match,” Jones added.
“They were 15 points above us, but now we are only four points off them, so it is a key game for us.
“We have got to win against the teams in and around us, so we are looking forward to it.”
