Town squander winning position

MALVERN Town suffered their second successive home defeat in the West Midlands Regional League as they squandered a half time lead against Wellington Amateurs.

Things appeared to be picking up for Town after Les Jones’ side claimed seven points from three games to start moving up the league table.

But, in a repeat of last week’s 3-1 defeat to Shawbury United, Malvern failed to build on a 1-0 advantage at the break as Wellington came storming back to secure a comfortable victory at the Langland Stadium.

The hosts were the stronger of the two sides in the early stages as Oliver Endacott twice came close to breaking the deadlock in the opening 15 minutes.

And Malvern’s supporters did not have to wait much longer for an opening goal. Ryan King produced a wonderful ball through to Endacott, who rounded Steven Bray before steadying himself and calmly slotting home.

But the goal scorer was then guilty of missing a golden opportunity to put Malvern further in front before the interval. Endacott had an empty goal to aim at after Wellington’s keeper Bray failed to collect a high ball, but the striker could only fire wide.

This chance ultimately proved pivotal as the visitors clawed their way back in the second half and they levelled the tie on the 47th minutes. After Wellington broke up-field Clayton Johnson cross fell to Ble Pangue who stabbed home from seven yards out.

Suddenly, Malvern found themselves on the back foot as the away side continued to press before Wellington eventually got their noses in front.

But it came in unfortunate circumstances for Malvern as James Kings’ long range effort took a wicked deflection, which sent it flying into the top corner.

The goal appeared to knock the stuff out of the hosts as Wellington clinched victory four minutes later when King added his second.

Malvern will be hoping to get their season back on track when they travel to Pegasus Juniors on Saturday (3pm).
