Town suffer fifth straight league defeat

MALVERN Town’s wretched run of form continued as they suffered a fifth successive defeat in the West Midlands Regional League, losing 4-2 away to Shawbury United on Saturday.

After conceding eight goals in their mid-week clash against Wednesfield, Malvern would have been looking to erase the memory of the heavy defeat with a strong performance in Shropshire.

But three goals in the space of 15 first half minutes left Les Jones’ side with a mountain to climb as Shawbury eventually ran out comfortable winners.

The opening stages did belong to Malvern, though, as Nick Astley pushed a free-kick over the bar before Lee Hooper’s shot was cleared off the line.

But the turning point came in a frenetic couple of minutes as Tom Rogers rose high to header the ball in off the post to give Shawbury the lead.

Dave Reynold almost immediately leveled matters as he fired over before the hosts went straight down the other end and grabbed a second, with Dale Williams slotting the ball past Charles Weaver.

Malvern afternoon then went from bad to worse just before the interval as Shawbury tripled their advantage when Rodgers intercepted the ball in the box before hammering home.

Despite the 3-0 deficit, Town came storming out of the blocks in the second period and quickly opened their account. Harry Wickett was ruled to have been brought down in the box by the referee and Hooper stepped up to convert the penalty.

Malvern could have fallen further behind, but for the heroics of Weaver who pulled off a superb double save. After denying Rodgers his hat-trick from close range, Town’s keeper superbly got in the way of another goal-bound shot.

But he could do nothing to stop Shawbury adding a fourth on the 74th minutes as Dan Beddows followed up his shot which was parried by Weaver to put the ball away.

The visitors battled until the end and got their reward with a late consolation goal from Andre Rodrigues.
