MALVERN Town picked up their eighth league win in 10 outings as they enjoyed a 2-0 victory over second from bottom Wellington Amateurs.
Goals from Matthew Turner and Ben Hayes ensured Malvern claimed the win on Saturday (February 16), but they dropped down to 11th in the West Midlands (Regional) League Premier Division table after Ellesmere Rangers romped to an 11-1 victory over basement club Tipton Town to climb up to 10th.
Malvern started the afternoon looking to return to winning ways after last weekend’s home draw to Wolverhampton Sporting Community and got off to the perfect start as they took the lead inside 15 minutes.
After Luke Corbett picked up the ball, he crossed it to Turner who slotted into the bottom right corner of the net from the edge of the area.
Wellington keeper Kelvin Robertson produced a good save to deny Louis Loader from doubling Malvern’s advantage from a free kick.
Nine minutes later, Corbett almost got on the scoresheet but his initial shot was well blocked before his follow-up attempt landed on the roof of the net.
After the interval, Corbett’s volley from Bryan Craven’s cross from the left was blocked on the line, with appeals that it had crossed the line quashed by the referee.
But Malvern doubled their lead on the 72nd minute after Corbett put Craven through with a wonderful through ball before he crossed to Hayes at the back post to fire home.
Reece King had a chance to add a third a minute from the end but he could not guide Phil Harris’ free kick on target.
Malvern’s next game sees them travel to the Dell Stadium on Saturday (February 20) to face 14th place Dudley Town.
It has also been confirmed that Malvern’s abandoned game at Pegasus Juniors will be replayed for the full 90 minutes at a date yet to be decided.
