Malvern residents can get up and running in 2018 with free Couch to 5k programme

MALVERN residents are being encouraged to spring into action and join a free running group to get them from ‘Couch to 5k’.

The fun, informal running group is for complete beginners and starts next Thursday from 10.30am at Malvern Town Football Club on Langland Avenue.

The 12-week scheme has been set up by Malvern Hills District Council following the success of last year’s programme and aims to help build confidence, stamina, fitness and well-being.

Running leader Rachel Vann will provide free training, advice and support throughout.

Couch to 5k is a national running scheme which has been designed to get people from the couch and gradually work up to running five kilometres in just 12 weeks.

Rachel Vann, well-being officer for Malvern Hills District Council said: “I love watching how people’s confidence and fitness grows on this course.

“Most people who start the programme can only run for 30 seconds, by the end of the 12 weeks participants can successfully run their first Park Run, non-stop.”

Sophie Barnes, who completed the last Couch to 5k programme in December last year, added: “I love the support and social nature of the Couch to 5km group.

“Not only have I met some lovely people, but my mood has improved, I’ve got much more energy and I can’t wait to take on my next challenge.”
